The Message Painting by Anna-Marie Buss

SERIES: THE WALL

“The Wall” is an evocative series of paintings that draws inspiration from the art movement “Les Nabis” (1888–1900), whose works revolutionised visual storytelling through bold planes of unmediated colour and rich symbolism. Like the Nabis’ ethos of blending the everyday with the spiritual, “The Wall” transforms a simple structure – a wall – into a canvas for layered meaning, inviting contemplation and dialogue. Each painting in the series captures a distinct moment, rendered in vibrant, deliberate tones that echo the symbolic style of the Nabis. These walls are not mere barriers; they are witnesses, storytellers, and keepers of secrets. Hidden within their textured surfaces, fragmented symbols, and cryptic motifs lies a message, its meaning shifting with each viewer’s interpretation. Is the wall a boundary or a passage? A place of confinement or connection? “The Wall” challenges us to look beyond its surface and question what is revealed, concealed, or left unsaid in its enigmatic presence.

“The Message”

Oil on Canvas | 20″ x 16″ | £1995
– Prints available from £80

Beneath a storm-churned sky, “The Message” captures a moment suspended in time – a tableau of intrigue and mystery. A woman, poised behind a towering, dusky pink wall, gazes toward the dark horizon. The wide brim of her hat casts a shadow over her eyes, shielding her thoughts from view. Perched beside her, a carrier pigeon, its mission interrupted, holds court as the fragile message it bore tumbles slowly, irretrievably down the wall’s face. What secrets did the letter carry? A plea, a confession, a warning? Its contents, now lost to the wind, leave only questions. Yet, the wall itself seems alive with its own cryptic language. Its fractured surface and scrawled graffiti whisper of stories etched in time – echoes of longing, rebellion, or forgotten truths waiting to be discovered. The interplay of the stormy black sky and the luminous pink wall draws the eye into the painting’s duality: hope against despair, concealment against revelation. And yet, the painting holds its secrets close, inviting the viewer to piece together the fragments of “The Message”.

The Opportunity Oil painting by Anna-Marie Buss

“The Opportunity”

Oil on Canvas | 20″ x 16″ | £1995
– Prints available from £80

In The Opportunity, the viewer is drawn into a moment suspended between nature, human intention, and the pull of unseen forces. At the heart of the composition, a Greater Spotted Woodpecker perches on a wall next to a woman. A striking figure whose eyes are hidden from view, as if contemplating something just beyond our reach. Her gaze, however, is not towards the bird, but into the horizon – a symbolic landscape that suggests both a personal and universal potential.

The woodpecker’s presence is no mere coincidence. In many cultures, this bird is a symbol of new opportunities – those sudden, often surprising chances that appear at our door when we least expect them. Its attention to the woman, in particular, suggests that the opportunity in question is not random, but directed toward her – an invitation for growth, perhaps, or a pivotal decision that requires action.

The stormy backdrop of black and red clouds serves as a stark contrast to the otherwise calm scene, representing internal or external turbulence – challenges that often accompany moments of transformation. The chaos of the sky suggests that opportunity does not come without its trials, but that growth and change are often found in the midst of struggle.

The opportunity is on offer, but the question remains: will she grasp it, or will she let it slip away into the stormy distance?

In The Opportunity, we are invited to reflect not only on the external forces that shape our lives but on the internal decisions that determine whether we embrace change when it knocks. The painting challenges us to consider the moments when the possibility of transformation is within reach, and whether we are ready to face the unknown and seize what is waiting just beyond our view.

The Web by Anna-Marie Buss

“The Web”

Oil on Canvas | 20″ x 16″ | £1995
– Prints available from £80

The Web invites us into a quietly charged moment where the delicate balance between human emotion, the natural world, and the wisdom of tradition comes into focus. A girl stands against a yellow wall, her posture downcast, eyes hidden beneath a yellow Asian conical hat. She gazes downward, her expression imbued with an air of quiet sorrow or contemplation. Her isolation is emphasised by the solitary presence of the wall and the subdued tone of the scene, but it is the bird beside her that brings an intriguing tension into the composition.

A yellow Weaver Bird, known for its extraordinary skill in building intricate, conical nests, gazes at her with sharp, intense focus. As the architect of the animal kingdom, the Weaver Bird represents the pinnacle of meticulous work, creativity, and perfectionism.

At the base of the wall rests a book titled The Web that has No Weaver. This book, a classic guide to Chinese alternative medicine, introduces the idea of the web as an interconnected system of energies, where balance is found not through rigid control, but through harmony with natural forces. The title itself hints at a paradox – a web that exists without a single, conscious architect.

In this quiet space, the girl, the bird, and the book form a triangle of subtle meaning. The bird, so driven and methodical in its pursuit of the perfect nest, represents the external pressures we place on ourselves to succeed or “build” in a certain way. The girl, in contrast, seems adrift, detached from that vision of precision, her gaze distant and uncertain, perhaps feeling the weight of these expectations. The book, with its guiding wisdom on balance and natural flow, offers a possible bridge between these two worlds – the rigid, controlled world of the Weaver Bird, and the girl’s softer, more introspective reality. The moonlit, cloudy sky in the background introduces an element of mystery, as if illuminating the deeper, unseen connections that bind all things together.

The Web challenges the viewer to reflect on the ways in which we navigate the complexities of life – whether we build our own intricate webs with perfect precision, or whether we find our place within a larger, unseen web that doesn’t require a single weaver at all.
