Bird Table - Bee Eater Painting by Anna-Marie Buss

SERIES: BIRD TABLE

“Bird Table”, a series of paintings inspired by a play on words. Each painting places different birds inappropriately on diversely appointed tables. The dominant colours express a compelling take on the central theme of beauty and symbolism in close proximity. The birds’ questioning expressions reinforces the ironic nature of the compositions.

“Bird Table – Kestrel”

Acrylic on Canvas | 20″ x 16″

Bird Table – Kestrel is a striking composition that plays with symbolism, irony, and visual contrast in unexpected ways. At the centre of the scene, a majestic kestrel perches atop a passionfruit cheesecake, its vibrant feathers echoing the rich colours and patterns of the dessert. The bird, typically associated with precision and focus, holds in its beak a Distinguished Flying Cross – the prestigious military honour awarded to RAF pilots for acts of valour in battle – an incongruous symbol of courage during such a delicate, edible landscape.

The juxtaposition of beauty and violence is further emphasised by a half-spilled passionfruit in the foreground, its seeds spilling across the table. Behind this seemingly serene moment, the ominous backdrop of dead woodland and swirling carrion hints at a darker, more primal reality, reminding us of the ever-present cycle of life and death.

Part of the artist’s Bird Table series, this piece engages in a playful yet thought-provoking exploration of the absurd. By placing birds inappropriately atop various tables, the series challenges conventional ideas of beauty, symbolism, and expectation. The Kestrel’s bowed head adds an ironic layer, as if it is aware of the dissonance between its usual flight through the skies and its current perch on a table set for something far more fleeting and fragile. The contrast between elegance and violence, life and death, beauty and decay, invites the viewer to reflect on the complexities of existence and the unexpected moments of grace that emerge from them.
